- Discussion from the floor regarding the title of a proposed course, Nature and Ecology in France. As “ecology” is an actual science, the suggestion is to change the title to “Nature and Environmentalism in France”, on a subsequent Form 29 to the Dean’s office.
- The number for the proposed course, The Community Interpreter, is wrong. Please approve with the incorrect number and the department will prepare a Form 29 for course number change to the Dean’s office.
- The APC also submitted a Student Proposed Major: This student’s proposal was previously approved, but the request is to change two courses – one course is not being offered, and the other course change is for a better fit within the student’s focus. Voting record: 19 ayes, 0 opposed, 0 abstentions.
- The APC submitted a request for a Program approval: BFA in Visual Art, through the Fine Arts Department. The chair of the department was on hand to answer questions and explained the differences between a BA and BFA. BFA is a more professional training and does require more classes vs. a more generalized study in liberal arts. No additional admission requirements other than a mandatory portfolio review, which are currently optional for the BA admission. The APC calls attention to the fact that this BFA program will exceed the number of credits that a subject code has, but that rule was built for BA’s and BS’s. In exceeding these limits, it is only the subject requirements that are affected. The BA degree will remain in place and requirements will remain the same. The BFA program, a degree, will be a second option.
- Paul Jargowsky, Senator-at-large and member of the FASC Deans search committee gave an update on the search. There were 95 applicants, whittled down to 13 and the committee will be inviting five to campus for interviews. The five candidates will remain anonymous until a day or two before their visits and will give a short presentation to various audiences on campus. Feedback to the search committee is encouraged, at this point via email. A suggestion was made to have a survey form available, as was done in past searches.
- Survey’s results: Student Writing issues – Stylistics, Topic Choice, and Paper Arrangement seem to be the three top issues – The Writing and Design Lab is currently supported by the English department and is an available resource to the students. A suggestion for faculty training on “how to teach writing”; share updated pedagogy; suggestions for how to assist students who struggle and are not as well prepared for college writing. The discussion led to the availability of faculty resources and support and utilization. Julie to ask director of TMAC to come to talk to the group about other resources available.
- Invite a guest speaker to explain the BOG Budget report, sent around.
