  • The APC submitted a request for a Program approval: Legal Studies Joint Major. The chair of the department was on hand to answer questions. LSM is a 30 credit joint B.A. and is open to any major in Arts & Sciences. The purpose of LSM is to enable undergraduate students to explore the connections between any other major area of study and the study of theories and practices of law. There were 17 minors in the first year and 50 more students are anticipated in the next academic year. Voting record: 17 ayes, 0 opposed, 0 abstentions.
  • The APC submitted a request for a Program approval: Forensic Science Undergraduate Minor. Kimberlee Moran was on hand to answer questions. The Forensic Science minor aims to recognize students who have taken courses of direct relevance to a career in forensic science or who have taken courses that have provided them with an understanding of several forensic disciplines. This program will be beneficial to those majoring in criminal justice or to science majors interested in forensic science graduate studies. Voting record: 17 ayes, 0 opposed, 0 abstentions.
  • The APC committee submitted a request for a course approval for Gender Studies; Salem Witch Trials 50:443:315. This course was previously offered as a special topics course under 50:988:299.
  • The Fine Arts Department submitted a request to change the name of the department to the Department of Visual Media and Performing Arts. Voting record: 17 ayes, 0 opposed, 0 abstentions.
  • It was presented at the meeting to send a list of all new/revised course proposals and Program Proposals to be voted on prior to the Senate meeting. Julie Still proposed creating a Survey Monkey for all courses to be reviewed one week prior to the meeting. If a quorum is not met, it will be discussed in the meetings. An idea was also presented to pass all courses as a slate at the beginning of the meeting rather than introducing them individually and voting. Jim Brown will check the bi-laws.
  • Travis Dubose of the English Department was present at the meeting to discuss the purpose of the Writing Lab and the financial challenges they are facing. The Writing and Design Lab is currently supported by the English department and is an available resource to the students. The Writing Lab was established in 2015 and is currently being funded by the English Department. Students are paid by stipends. A budget is being proposed to the Dean to receive funding from other departments given that the lab is open to all students, not just English majors. Travis has been invited to attend the meeting on December 10, 2018 to continue the discussion on faculty services, as well as other resources in the lab. A resolution by the Faculty Senate will be proposed at the next meeting to advocate for support of the Writing and Design Lab.
