The meeting was called to order at approximately 12:48 p.m., with FASC Senate President Jim Brown presiding. There are 43 Senators, including two officers and five senators-at-large. Of the 43 voting members, 35 were present.  A quorum was met. 

  • A motion to approve the minutes of May 6, 2019 was made. The motion to approve the minutes with the correction was Voting record: 34 ayes, 0 opposed, 1 abstention

  • General Remarks:
    • Main focus of Faculty Senate this year is to focus on issues to address (i.e. increase in online classes, retentions issues, tenure-track position process) and procedures (i.e. returning to bi-laws, Robert’s Rules, and timed agendas)
    • In order to change bi-laws, every faculty member must vote
    • Senate must have a minimum of 30 members, maximum 60 (every 5 members of a department=1 senator)
    • President, Vice-President, Secretary=Steering Committee
    • Extra meetings require 25% vote
    • Representatives may be sent in a senator’s absence, but they cannot vote
    • Student representatives are allowed at meetings, but cannot vote
    • Attendance will be tracked. 2 unexcused absences will result in removal from Senate
    • Occasional online votes may be required (i.e. approving graduates)
  • Travis Dubose of the Writing & Design Lab attended the meeting
    • Serves all of Arts & Sciences
    • Serves undergraduate students only
    • Located in the Walt Whitman Center
    • Walk-in hours M-F 9:00am-3:00pm
    • Appointments can be made at wdl.camden.rutgers.edu
    • Appointments consist of a 45-minute session with a peer tutor to assist with writing needs, presentations, Power Point, and audio projects
    • Consultants are paid undergraduates (juniors/seniors)
  • New Business
    • Focusing energy on things Faculty Senate can do
    • Faculty role on implementation of Infosilum (representative has been requested for next meeting)
    • Role of Senate (pass resolutions, voice opinions as long as it is done in the context of the bi-laws, curriculum, tenure promotions, hiring, advisory body to Dean)
    • Future discussions for advocating mental health services

 

The meeting adjourned at 1:45 p.m.
