The meeting was called to order at approximately 11:25 a.m., with FASC Senate President Julie Still presiding.  There are 36 Senators, including three officers and five senators-at-large.  Of the 28 voting members, 16 were present.  A quorum was met.

  • Travis Dubose of the English Department was present at the meeting to continue the discussion the purpose of the Writing Lab and the financial challenges they are facing. The goal of the Writing Lab is to provide students with proofreading skills. A tracking system is currently being worked on to assist departments with monitoring students for financial contributions. A copy of a draft resolution was presented to assist in advocating for support of the Writing Lab to the Dean. Voting record: 16 ayes, 0 opposed, 0 abstentions.
  • Laura Napolitano of the Sociology Department was present at the meeting to discuss the addition of a Recitation to Methods and Techniques (50:950:301) and its success. The recitation is a Dean funded one credit course taught by graduate students to assist students with their writing quality. Faculty looking to add recitations to courses are required to complete a Course Initiative for Student Success (CISS) survey.
  • The Faculty Senate has requested Bill Fitzgerald and Travis Dubose to draft a list of best practices for writing assignments. Voting record: 16 ayes, 0 opposed, 0 abstentions.
  • It was presented by Julie Still to revise the current Form 29. Discussions on this will resume in January.
  • It was presented at November’s meeting to send a list of all new/revised course proposals and Program Proposals to be voted on prior to the Senate meeting. Julie Still proposed creating a Survey Monkey for all courses to be reviewed one week prior to the meeting. All courses will be passed as a slate at the beginning of the meeting rather than introducing them individually and voting. If a quorum is not met or questions pertaining to new courses arise, it will be discussed in the meetings. Departments submitting for the addition of new courses should still have a department representative attend the meeting to discuss the new submissions. Voting record: 16 ayes, 0 opposed, 0 abstentions
  • A discussion was started regarding the roles of faculty supervisors of student organizations. Jovin Fernandez will be invited to a future meeting to continue the discussion.
  • Julie Still continued the discussion on student issues. 18 members filled out the writing survey and 9 members filled out the student support services survey. Jason Rivera will be invited to attend a future meeting to discuss all questions presented.
  • Travel under 100 miles will be reimbursed.
  • Samantha Kanneyiser and Zara Wilkinson of the Paul Robeson Library were present at the meeting to discuss faculty concerns about supporting documentation and research. The library assists students in finding the resources they need, as well as helping to develop a fluency with using library resources.
