NOTE: Jennifer Thiel had previously agreed to contact the Registrar about loading onto Degree Navigator all newly approved courses for the Master Course List. Department chairs are encouraged to follow up with the Registrar and Advising to confirm that courses have been added, edited, or removed.

  1. Faculty Senator Guy Kortsarz addressed the floor with comments on behavior at meetings and a statement of protest with regard to the recently approved course, Ethics and the Future of Humanity, on the grounds that no one is qualified to know the future.

Discussion from the floor ensued. Senators were reminded to come prepared to the meetings with questions, to be respectful toward others, and to raise their hand to be recognized. Senators clarified that Ethics and the Future of Humanity is not about predicting the future, but rather about exploring writings and ideas about the future.

With regard to requests for course approvals to the Senate, Janet Golden reminded the group that every course is carefully vetted by the Academic Policy Committee: APC members and presenting departments engage in detailed and lengthy discussions about course proposals. She encouraged faculty members with concerns about new classes to serve on such committees.

  1. The letter regarding approval of general education courses was withdrawn and will be presented at a later meeting.
  2. New Business: Mary Beth Daisey, Associate Chancellor for Student Affairs, visited to talk about how we can assist our DACA students. Senators asked Mary Beth about available resources; financial aid; safe zones; and our legal responsibilities. She informed the Senate that her office is preparing a pamphlet with more information and that our Law School has a clinic at which students are protected by attorney/client privilege. Health Services is also available for confidential assistance. Finally, Mary Beth informed the Senate that there are ways to seek need-based scholarships without completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
  3. Announcement: The RU Libraries are celebrating Faculty Scholarship from March 27 – 31, 2017. Emails will be circulated with details.
