  • In line with an initiative by the Dean of Arts and Sciences, three courses for “Student Success” were submitted for approval. These one-credit courses are not required, but on a pass/fail basis they will be available to help students organize and improve their work for the related courses. Initially, the English Department called their proposed class 350:105 “Lab: Research and Writing,” but after discussion with department chair Lisa Zeidner, the FASC approved the course with a name change. There was also discussion about criteria for grading and the meaning of “life skills” in the Form 29 for the Psychology Student Success courses. It was suggested that enrollment in these courses require permission of the instructor. The FASC approved these courses, but requested to hear information about their results at the end of the 2018-19 academic year. The FASC also requested that Dean Lindenmeyer or a representative from her office address the Senate about this initiative.
  • Guy Kortsarz requested assistance with scheduling a meeting with the Urban Studies program about creating a Cinema Club.

NOTE: Jennifer Thiel had previously agreed to contact the Registrar about loading onto Degree Navigator all newly approved courses for the Master Course List. Department chairs were encouraged to follow up with the Registrar and Advising to confirm that courses have been added, edited, or removed.

  1. In anticipation of the imminent call for service from the dean’s office, Rich Epstein asked senators to urge their departmental colleagues to volunteer for service during the coming academic year on the FASC executive and on committees. As longtime chair of the Committee on Rules and Procedures, Professor Epstein has encountered ongoing difficulties in convincing most FAS faculty to step up for faculty governance. It was suggested that a mechanism be put in place for some positions be extended beyond one year, e.g., for a president and president-elect of the Faculty Senate. A motion was made and approved to continue this discussion at the next senate meeting (April 26, 2017).
  1. New Business: Acting President Wayne Glasker reported the sad news of the death of Janet Golden’s husband Eric Schneider. This motion: “The Faculty Senate of Arts and Sciences wish to express our sympathy to Janet and to let her know that our thoughts are with her, was made and unanimously approved.
