I. Senate Business
a. Final review of Senate, FASC and Standing Committee Bylaws
The President made a motion to discuss a vote on the Bylaws. Jim Brown seconded the motion.
Dean Griffin started the discussion by thanking members of the Senate for all the recommendations made. The bylaws that were passed last year were aligned with current University policy, incorporating the recent Senate recommendations. The Senate-approved bylaws will then be brought to the full faculty for a vote, at the end of April.
b. Motion to vote on Faculty Senate approval of Bylaws
The President motioned to vote on the Bylaws that would then be sent for a vote of the full FASC. The motion was approved.
Voting record: 13 ayes, 0 opposed, 2 abstentions.
c. Faculty DEI Subcommittee (SIRS diversity question review)
The Senate reviewed the questions brought forward by the DEI Subcommittee:
-
-
-
-
- Did the instructor support an inclusive and respectful learning environment? (rate between 1-5)
- How might the class climate be made more inclusive of diverse students? (open-ended response)
-
-
-
Kwangwon Lee will be invited to the next Senate meeting to answer questions that may arise, before the Senate votes in support of or in opposition to the SIRS questions.
II. New Business
The President announced that the Senate will begin discussing the topic of online courses and online education at Rutgers in the next upcoming Senate meetings. Dean Griffin has a number of issues he would like the Senate to review and provide advisement on.
Jim Brown: The full campus commencement has very limited space on stage for faculty, which some faculty are not happy about, as they are advised to sit with the crowd. It seems odd to fill the stage with people the students generally do not know and/or have any sort of relationship with to shake hands with as they walk across the stage.
Dean Griffin is fully aware of this concern and agrees with the fact that faculty should be invited on stage when degrees are conferred, as opposed to just during the convocation. It is a matter of figuring out how to manage the stage and Dean Griffin is working towards it. However, Dean Griffin expressed his desire for faculty to participate in the CCAS convocation ceremony, and to please stay for the duration, not just once their discipline has finished walking the stage.
The meeting adjourned at 1:45 p.m.
