  1. The President shared updates with the Senate:
    1. Dean’s proposed metric for assessing departments – After consultations and open meetings with chairs, alternatives were proposed to the teacher-centric metric, to the Dean, which he was not opposed to. A copy of the proposal titled “Alternative Metric for Dean” was shared with the Senate; please let Jovanna know if you were unable to access the document.
    2. Strategic Planning Committee – Not a lot came out of first meeting. The Dean appears to be pushing for Experiential Learning, though it’s unclear what this means. Next meeting will take place at the end of January.
    3. Provost search – Three candidates were selected for campus visits. Awaiting the Chancellor’s final decision.

  1. Mary Beth Daisey came to speak to the Senate about the Division of Student Affairs and the ongoing and continued partnerships with faculty members on campus. Some projects include:
    1. Dean of Students – Works with students having difficulties; are disruptive; dealing with some kind of situation (death in family, illness, etc.).
    2. Scholastic Standing Committee – Works with faculty to find resources and options for students.
    3. Wellness Center – Available to talk with faculty for consultations.
    4. Athletics & Rec Dept. – May communicate with faculty as students have exams.
    5. Committees always looking for faculty to be a part of: Student Concerns Committee; Disability Advisory Group; Undocumented Student Advisory Group; Veterans Advisory Group.
    6. Title IX & Pregnancy Services – State and federal laws were updated to include pregnancy services for students.

A question was raised regarding training for faculty in dealing with students who are non-normative, and ways of integrating these students into classrooms.

  • Naomi Marmorstein provided training specific to this issue. The Graduate School of Applied & Professional Psychology, who has an Autism Spectrum Center, also did a training for the university. Mary Beth Daisey will look into hosting a training for the Camden campus sometime in the spring.

A chart of who to contact is available for different student scenarios:  https://studentaffairs.camden.rutgers.edu/who-contact.

An issue was raised regarding finding ways to get students to engage in class material after having had remote instruction for two years. May need to be a discussion amongst the Senate on how to address and handle.

  • Orientation for returning students is a possibility, but likelihood of a good turnout is very low.
  • Mary Beth Daisey will confirm if a policy exists requiring students to turn cameras on during remote instruction.

  • The President solicited a volunteer for Senate VP for the Spring 2023 semester. James Boucher volunteered to be Senate VP.

  1. The President presented to the Senate the proposed amendments to the bylaws. A discussion took place regarding the proposal to merge committees (APC and Gen Ed.), and it was agreed the merge proposal would be recanted. A motion was made to bring the amendments to a vote; the motion was seconded. There will be an opportunity for those senators who did not get a chance to review the amendments, to review after the meeting and then vote online.

Voting record: 23 ayes, 0 opposed, 1 abstention
