The meeting was called to order at approximately 11:20 a.m.., with FASC Senate President Bill Fitzgerald presiding. There are 38 Senators, including 3 officers and four senators-at-large. Of the 42 voting members, 38 were present.  A quorum was met.

  • Student Language Proficiency:
    • Presentation given by Evan Jewell
    • Concerns with students not having basic written English skills
    • How to make sure students don’t fall through the cracks
    • Find ways to support students by not being so dependent on oral and written skills
    • Review of admissions procedures
    • Are online English classes preparing students for success?
    • Refine language proficiency and testing
    • Concerns with graduating students that are functionally illiterate
    • Creation of writing intensive courses for students to take early on
    • Concerns of setting up students for failure in a systemic way
    • Better communication needed for requirements for writing intensive courses to students
    • Travis DuBose-Writing & Design Lab
      • Working with International Students Office to assist students
        • Writing labs need to be reinstated
        • Receive direct referrals from instructors

 

  • Faculty Senate By-laws
    • Planning and budget committee
    • Faculty felt like they had very little input on budgets and planning
    • Dean unhappy with revisions, concerns of being in violation of by-laws
    • Decision to move forward or leave as is
    • Creation of new sub-committee to move forward

    • Mentoring credits
