Meeting of the Faculty Senate
Approved Minutes
October 26, 2016
The meeting was called to order at 12:25 p.m.
- A motion was made to approve the minutes of September 21, 2016. The motion was approved unanimously by voice vote.
- Mike Palis reported that the new General Education requirements will go into effect for all three RUC schools in Fall 2017, with the Course Scheduling System revised accordingly. Only incoming first-year students in Fall 2017 will be subject to the new requirements; the requirements will not apply to transfer students until Fall 2018. As for current students, they will be able to choose whether to follow the current or new requirements. The Gen Ed website is currently being developed by registrar Terri Cristofaro. Mike asked that we provide Terri with feedback before the site goes live.
Mike also let the Senate know that Block Scheduling will go into effect in Fall 2017. He explained that RUC’s growth, a result of our Bridging the Gap program, has made changes in classroom use and classroom times necessary. As he put it, “We have to do this.” For example, at present our meeting patterns don’t allow for three-hour labs. They also won’t provide sufficient time for students to get to and from their classes when our campus expands to include the new Science and Nursing building going up at Fifth and Federal and our new Joint Health Sciences Center.
Courses taught “by arrangement” will no longer be listed in the CSS, but chairs can work with the Registrar to find open classrooms. In response to a question about courses with outside lab components that involve time outside school, Mike agreed to check with the Registrar about the best way to proceed.
Training sessions will be available for department chairs, UPCs, and other course schedulers in November. There will also be a Scheduling Committee of associate deans, as well as a Block Scheduling website that will soon go live.
- Julie Still, on behalf of the Academic Policy Committee, presented the following courses for approval. Voting record is as follows: All ayes, except as noted.
